Esteemed colleagues and dear students,

In recent years, we have witnessed a gradual yet noticeable shift among the youth toward pursuing non-traditional academic paths. What were once considered mere hobbies have now evolved into respected mainstream professions. Two human aspirations—the desire to travel and the need for good food—will continue to shape the future. Both globally and in India, the tourism and hospitality sector is poised for remarkable growth, offering tremendous employment opportunities for our young population.
During the 12th Five-Year Plan, the tourism sector was expected to grow at 12%, leading to a requirement of nearly 3.6 million trained professionals across various levels of the hospitality industry. The Planning Commission recognizes tourism as the second-largest employment sector, especially for low-skilled and semi-skilled workers. It is encouraging to note that women represent nearly 70% of the workforce and half of the industry comprises individuals aged 25 or below. Clearly, hospitality education provides an ideal platform for young aspirants seeking a dynamic and promising career. At the National Council for Hotel Management & Catering Technology (NCHMCT), our flagship three-year degree program, along with several specialized courses, equips students with the knowledge, competencies, and practical skills required to excel in the hospitality domain. The diverse student community at our institutes—coming from different regions, cultures, and socio-economic backgrounds—thrives in an inclusive learning environment where merit, talent, and hard work lead to meaningful career progression. Our students consistently secure some of the best placements both in India and abroad.
As the world becomes increasingly globalized, higher education institutions must evolve accordingly. Exposure to international cultures, global best practices, and collaborative learning is essential. Our students must engage with global partners, participate in exchange programs, undertake research collaborations, and learn through international case studies and industry projects. Such experiences will broaden their perspectives and prepare them for global standards in hospitality.
India currently faces a significant shortage of qualified faculty in hospitality education. The Ministry of Tourism, together with NCHMCT, is committed to promoting teaching as an attractive and rewarding career option. Embracing technological innovations is crucial to enhance learning outcomes and move beyond traditional teaching methods. Just as technology has transformed the travel industry, it must now transform hospitality education.
With the national emphasis on pro-poor tourism, skill development, and capacity building, initiatives such as the Hunar Se Rozgar Tak scheme are empowering youth from various communities by offering job-oriented training. The Clean India Campaign has also gained momentum, ensuring hygiene and cleanliness at tourist destinations across the country. Additionally, measures like visa on arrival for select nations reflect India’s commitment to boosting tourism.
Our institutes aspire to become true centres of excellence, backed by modern infrastructure, state-of-the-art training facilities, and strong industry partnerships. Besides hotels and restaurants, our graduates are increasingly sought after by the Armed Forces, Financial Institutions, Insurance Companies, and several segments of the service industry. Through our association with IGNOU, students enjoy strong vertical mobility, enabling them to pursue MBA and postgraduate programs in India and abroad. Many of our alumni have also become successful entrepreneurs.
In an industry as competitive and dynamic as hospitality, keeping one’s dream alive requires dedication, perseverance, and the right guidance. Our institutes strive to provide students with opportunities for skill enhancement, innovation, networking, and career advancement, preparing them for the challenges and possibilities of the future.
On behalf of NCHMCT and all its Institutes, I extend my best wishes to every student. May you achieve great success and contribute meaningfully to the hospitality industry.
