History of NCHMCT
The National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology (NCHMCT) was established in 1982 by the Government of India, under the Ministry of Tourism, as an autonomous body with the purpose of structuring and regulating hospitality education in the country. Initially called the National Board of Studies in Food Management, Catering & Nutrition, it was later renamed to better reflect its growing scope and responsibilities.
Key Milestones in NCHMCT's History:
- 1982: Established as an autonomous body to oversee and coordinate hospitality education in India.
- 1989: With the growing need for a standardized curriculum, NCHMCT developed a common syllabus for its affiliated institutes.
- 1992: In collaboration with Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), NCHMCT launched a 3-Year B.Sc. in Hospitality and Hotel Administration to bring hospitality education under a recognized university system.
- 2000s: The Council expanded its reach by affiliating a large number of Institutes of Hotel Management (IHMs), both Government and private, across India.
- 2020 onwards: NCHMCT continued modernizing curriculum and promoting digital learning and industry integration in hospitality education.
Role and Objectives:
- Designing and regulating academic standards in hospitality education.
- Conducting the NCHM JEE (Joint Entrance Exam) for admission to IHMs across India.
- Promoting research, innovation, and training in hospitality and tourism.
- Coordinating with institutions and industry for internship, placement, and curriculum alignment with market trends.
Current Status:
NCHMCT now oversees more than 70 IHMs, including Central, State Government, PSU-run, and private institutes. It is recognized as the apex body in hospitality education in India and plays a vital role in skilling youth for careers in the hospitality and tourism sector both domestically and internationally.
